This website contains art and ideas from the W&L 4 week spring term course Images of Justice. This philosophy class interrogates the way justice is portrayed visually; students then create their own “images of justice” which respond to course readings and conversations. We invite you to check out the menu for each week’s art and final projects—site will be updated as course continues!
Students in the course created all of the art you will see on this site, along with explanations (excerpted) about how their art explains their ideas. Students also wrote original alt-text (image descriptions) for all art.
Course Summary
Western philosophy often contains visual descriptions of justice; we show justice as a person, a pie, a series of steps, a veil. In this interactive and creative course, we’ll interrogate classic and contemporary ideas of justice and the images associated with them. Each week, students will find and make images that explain, criticize, or expand upon a way we conceive of justice. Students will be able to create images in multiple ways; art experience and being “good at drawing” certainly not required.
